KU Health Quivira Campus opens doors, sees first patients

The doors are open and the first patients have been seen at the new University of Kansas Health System Quivira Campus. The newest crown jewel of KU Health is ready to bring leading-edge specialty care from one of the region’s premier academic medical centers to the southeast edge of Olathe and the entire southwest Kansas City market.

“This is a great location and we’re so excited for people to get to see this location and get to experience this location,” said Tammy Peterman, President of the health system’s Kansas City Division. “Here at 151st and Quivira is a fabulous place for us to be. I think it’s the services that will make a difference in this community.”

The first building on the Quivira Campus, Quivira Medical Pavilion A, 12000 W. 151st St., offers orthopedics, physical and occupational therapy, plastic surgery and urology, as well as lab and imaging services. Key features include:

  • Centralized Level 1 patient check-in desk
  • 30 exam rooms and four procedure rooms
  • Five physical and occupational therapy rooms plus a gym
  • Imaging services including MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, DEXA and screening mammogram
  • Outpatient lab services
  • Coffee shop

“We had a vision and a design for this place that reflected our community model,” said Jason Hannagan, CEO of KU Health’s southwest market. “Initially, we’ll see about 400 patients a day. The goal is to bring more access to our community.”

By the end of 2024, the facility will add an ambulatory surgery center offering surgeries and procedures in the same specialties it currently offers, plus gynecology. The first patients were seen last week and the opening of the facility brings 40 new jobs to the community, along with various care teams relocating to the campus. Construction of the $90 million facility began prior to the merger of KU and Olathe Health.

“We couldn’t be more grateful for the leadership at the Chamber, the City of Olathe and the Mayor’s office,” said Jason Hannagan, CEO of KU Health’s southwest market. “When you enter a market that has been undeveloped, it takes an entire team to show that vision to our community and we’ve been so excited to see the response from our community to this location.”

The facility is an initial step to fulfill the health system’s promise to bring more care close to home in the Olathe community.

“We’ve been talking about having a greater presence in the southwest market and having Olathe Health as part of the University of Kansas Health System, was that big step in adding hospitals in Olathe and Miami County,” Peterman added. “But also, adding these ambulatory services, these clinic services is great for the community. There’s greater access now for these specialty services.

“Having access and being able to pullup, park and walk in is what people want. They want convenience. We’re bringing convenience, as well as the services to this part of the county.”

Peterman loves the new facility, but loves what’s inside the new Quivira Campus even more.

“The buildings are fabulous, but it’s really the people that make the difference,” Peterman said. “It’s the group of people that come to work every day taking care of patients and their families. That’s what the difference will be.”
