Dialogue with Artist Kahlil Robert Irving and Dia Curator Jordan Carter

Kahlil Robert Irving was born in San Diego, in 1992. He currently lives and works in St. Louis. He attended the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art, Washington University in St. Louis (MFA Fellow, 2017) and the Kansas City Art Institute (BFA, Art History and Ceramics, 2015). He was an Artist in Residence at Art Omi in summer 2018. He was awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award in 2019, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2020, and the inaugural Cultured magazine Young Artists Prize in 2023. Irving’s past solo exhibitions have taken place at Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts, Conn.; the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), N.Y.; and the Walker Art Center, Minn. He has also participated in Social Works II at Gagosian Gallery in London; the Singapore Biennale, Singapore Soft Water Hard Stone; The New Museum Triennial; and Making Knowing at the Whitney Museum of Art. This year, Irving has two simultaneous solo exhibitions at major institutions: the Nerman Museum, representing the Kansas City metro region and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis. Jordan Carter is a curator at the Dia Art Foundation, a New York-based organization known for its prized collection of Minimalist and conceptual art. Previously, Carter was Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 2015–17, he was a Curatorial Fellow at the Walker Art Center. Before his time at the Walker, Carter was Fluxus Collection Intern at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), N.Y. Carter has also held curatorial and research positions at the Studio Museum in Harlem and Centre Pompidou in Paris. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, Providence, R.I., and a master’s degree from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, where he focused on Fluxus and global conceptual art. AnticKS & MOdels + My theater to your eyes: Kahlil Robert Irving will be on view in the Nerman Museum's Oppenheimer, Thompson and Anonymous galleries February 9 through July 7, 2024. This exhibition, sponsored by the Lighton Fund, marks the artist's first institutional solo exhibition in Kansas and a return to the central Midwest. This program is sponsored by the African American Artists Collective, KC.

First Annual SOAR Sensory EGG’sploration

This unique Easter egg hunt will kick off the Easter holiday with a sensory egg hunt featuring special therapeutic sensory eggs. The plastic eggs will be carefully placed in a safe, grassy section of Westside Family Church grounds. The sensory Easter eggs provide an innovative solution to help individuals with disabilities take part in a favorite Easter tradition. Having the opportunity to provide an unforgettable holiday celebration for these amazing kids and their families with the help of various members of our community is an experience we are truly grateful for. SOAR Special Needs staff and volunteers will assist and give support to the children during the Easter egg hunt. During the hunt, individuals will be given an Easter basket to fill with candy and toys as well as there will be the opportunity to visit and take photos with the Easter Bunny and SOAR Special Needs very own, Bubba Bear.

MTC Kids Jam – Sugar Free Allstars

‘Beyond Babel’

"Beyond Babel" is about the division of families, friends and a community of people as authorities decide to build a wall between them. We follow two divinely linked lovers as they reconcile with the rising tensions of a populace cut in half. The show is set to a contemporary soundtrack and features a cast of 12 elite dancers. It is described by the New York Times as "astonishing and irresistible."

Chamber Coffee at United Consumers Credit Union

With more than 100 attendees, the coffees are the largest weekly networking event in the Kansas City metro area. They are held on Thursdays at a different member business or organization each week. The Nerman Museum invites you to a dialogue between Mary Frances Ivey, Guest Curator for the Elizabeth Layton: Drawing as Discourse exhibition, and Don Lambert, Elizabeth Layton’s advocate and friend. Elizabeth Layton: Drawing as Discourse will be on view in the Nerman Museum’s Kansas Focus Gallery and Oppenheimer New Media Gallery January 25 through July 28, 2024. The exhibition brings together 30 of Layton’s drawings and highlights the enduring legacy of her work. Taking cues from the artist’s interest in the power of art to inform, disarm, and engage, this exhibition presents Layton’s work as a space for discourse.
