In the 1920s, the community was invited to take holiday gifts to children living at KCSL’s receiving home, a temporary residence for children awaiting a foster or adoptive home. These children would hang their “Little Red Stockings” in anticipation of the generosity of the community. Kahlil Robert Irving was born in San Diego in 1992. He currently lives and works in St. Louis. He attended the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art, Washington University in St. Louis (MFA Fellow, 2017) and the Kansas City Art Institute (BFA, Art History and Ceramics, 2015). He was an Artist in Residence at Art Omi in summer 2018. He was awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award in 2019, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2020 and the inaugural Cultured magazine Young Artists Prize in 2023. Irving’s past solo exhibitions have taken place at Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts, Conn.; the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), N.Y.; and the Walker Art Center, Minn. He has also participated in Social Works II at Gagosian Gallery in London; the Singapore Biennale, Singapore; Soft Water Hard Stone; The New Museum Triennial; and Making Knowing at the Whitney Museum of Art. This year, Irving has two simultaneous solo exhibitions at major institutions: the Nerman Museum, representing the Kansas City metro region, and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis. AnticKS & MOdels + My theater to your eyes: Kahlil Robert Irving will be on view in the Nerman Museum’s Oppenheimer, Thompson and Anonymous galleries February 9 through July 7, 2024. Join us for a dialogue between artist, educator, and Charlotte Street 2023 fellow Ruben Castillo and Stuart Hinds, Curator of Special Collections & Archives, University Libraries at UMKC. Ruben Castillo and Stuart Hinds will discuss how artists use research and archives to inform and expand their artistic practice. Castillo’s current installation at the Nerman Museum features works that reference specific objects in the Gay and Lesbian Archives of Mid-America (GLAMA), which is part of the Special Collections & Archives at UMKC. Over the course of several years, Castillo worked with Hinds to conduct research into the histories and aesthetics of these important objects and incorporated them into his ongoing printmaking and installation practice. Learn more about his artistic journey and about the resources that the Special Collections have to offer. This dialogue will occur online only. Kahlil Robert Irving was born in San Diego, in 1992. He currently lives and works in St. Louis. He attended the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art, Washington University in St. Louis (MFA Fellow, 2017) and the Kansas City Art Institute (BFA, Art History and Ceramics, 2015). He was an Artist in Residence at Art Omi in summer 2018. He was awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award in 2019, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2020, and the inaugural Cultured magazine Young Artists Prize in 2023. Irving’s past solo exhibitions have taken place at Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts, Conn.; the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), N.Y.; and the Walker Art Center, Minn. He has also participated in Social Works II at Gagosian Gallery in London; the Singapore Biennale, Singapore Soft Water Hard Stone; The New Museum Triennial; and Making Knowing at the Whitney Museum of Art. This year, Irving has two simultaneous solo exhibitions at major institutions: the Nerman Museum, representing the Kansas City metro region and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis. Jordan Carter is a curator at the Dia Art Foundation, a New York-based organization known for its prized collection of Minimalist and conceptual art. Previously, Carter was Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 2015–17, he was a Curatorial Fellow at the Walker Art Center. Before his time at the Walker, Carter was Fluxus Collection Intern at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), N.Y. Carter has also held curatorial and research positions at the Studio Museum in Harlem and Centre Pompidou in Paris. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, Providence, R.I., and a master’s degree from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, where he focused on Fluxus and global conceptual art. AnticKS & MOdels + My theater to your eyes: Kahlil Robert Irving will be on view in the Nerman Museum's Oppenheimer, Thompson and Anonymous galleries February 9 through July 7, 2024. This unique Easter egg hunt will kick off the Easter holiday with a sensory egg hunt featuring special therapeutic sensory eggs. The plastic eggs will be carefully placed in a safe, grassy section of Westside Family Church grounds. The sensory Easter eggs provide an innovative solution to help individuals with disabilities take part in a favorite Easter tradition. Having the opportunity to provide an unforgettable holiday celebration for these amazing kids and their families with the help of various members of our community is an experience we are truly grateful for. SOAR Special Needs staff and volunteers will assist and give support to the children during the Easter egg hunt. During the hunt, individuals will be given an Easter basket to fill with candy and toys as well as there will be the opportunity to visit and take photos with the Easter Bunny and SOAR Special Needs very own, Bubba Bear.

Get your dancing shoes on! The SOAR With Someone Special Prom is for individuals with special needs and their parent/caregiver. This is open to all ages; a parent, caregiver, or date must attend and purchase their own ticket. No buddies will be provided for the prom, and all dates or parents/caregiver will be responsible for the participant they are with. The theme for this year's prom is Majestic Monarchs. The cost is $25 per individual. Each participant must come with at least one individual accompanying them.
