Shafer, Kline & Warren Earns National Recognition with Engineering Excellence Award
Lenexa, Kansas (March 2, 2016) – The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) has awarded Shafer, Kline & Warren (SKW) with an Engineering Excellence National Recognition Award, a prestigious recognition given to the year’s best engineering triumphs that demonstrate uniqueness and complexity; as well as technical, economic and social value.
SKW is being recognized for its role in designing and planning the comprehensive upgrades to Fort Leavenworth’s Pershing Lift Station and aging wastewater collection system. American Water Military Services Group (MSG) owns and operates the water and wastewater systems at Fort Leavenworth along with 11 other active military installations. MSG operates these systems to ensure they are safe, compliant and reliable.
The Pershing Lift Station project at Fort Leavenworth is a success story of the partnership between MSG, utility privatization and the federal government. This project was proposed by MSG to address issues such as aging infrastructure, the risk of failure and establish long-term sustainability for Fort Leavenworth. MSG leveraged a design-build approach to meet the 12-month project timeline and awarded the project to Rodriguez Mechanical Contractors (RMC) who teamed with SKW to provide survey and engineering solutions, and observe the construction of a new gravity collection system, force main and lift station.
“For us, this project represents American Water delivering on its promise to serve the armed forces needs through the Utility Privatization program,” said Rory Munns, capital manager with MSG. “SKW and RMC were outstanding partners. They executed solutions to the location’s challenges and completed the project on time and within budget.”
Prior to the project, Fort Leavenworth’s aging collection system consisted of four gravity sewers built from vitrified clay and concrete pipe, and included an interceptor with an aerial crossing over Corral Creek. By using a road embankment over the creek to bury one of the gravity sewers and the force main, it eliminated the aerial crossing, which posed an environmental threat as it deteriorated. Additionally, the lift station design is capable of taking in all gravity sewer inflows to eliminate the aging interceptor sewer.
“We focused on creating solutions that would best serve the Fort, reduce maintenance and protect the environment,” said SKW Senior Project Manager Steve Baker, P.E. “We are humbled and honored to have this work recognized nationally among the top engineering projects of 2016.”
As a recipient of a 2016 ACEC Engineering Excellence Award, SKW will be recognized at the 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, April 19.
