Shafer, Kline & Warren Earns ACEC of Kansas Engineering Excellence Award

ACEC of Kansas recognizes SKW for its use of a design-build approach to complete comprehensive upgrades to Fort Leavenworth’s Pershing Lift Station and collection system.

Lenexa, Kansas (January 4, 2016) – American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Kansas selected one of Shafer, Kline & Warren’s (SKW) projects for a 2016 Engineering Excellence Award, a recognition given to projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement and value.

SKW received the award for its work on comprehensive upgrades to Fort Leavenworth’s Pershing Lift Station and aging wastewater collection system, which improved public health, safety and welfare while protecting the environment. Leveraging a design-build approach to meet the 12-month project timeline, SKW teamed with Rodriguez Mechanical Contractors (RMC) to provide survey and engineering solutions, and observed the construction of a new gravity collection system, force main and lift station.

“We focused on creating solutions that would best serve the Fort, reduce maintenance and protect the environment,” said SKW’s project lead, Steve Baker, P.E. “We are honored to have this project recognized among some of the top engineering projects of 2016.”

As a recipient of the 2016 ACEC of Kansas award, SKW’s project will be among those considered for national recognition through ACEC.

Prior to the project, Fort Leavenworth’s aging collection system consisted of four gravity sewers built from vitrified clay and concrete pipe, and included an interceptor with an aerial crossing over Corral Creek. By using a road embankment over the creek to bury one of the gravity sewers and the force main, SKW eliminated the aerial crossing, which posed an environmental threat as it deteriorated. Additionally, SKW designed a lift station capable of taking in all gravity sewer inflows to eliminate the aging interceptor sewer.

“For us, this project represents American Water delivering on its promise to serve the public’s needs through the Utility Privatization,” said Michael Munns, capital manager with American Water Enterprises Military Services Group. “SKW and RMC were outstanding partners. They developed solutions to the location’s challenges and completed the project on time and within budget.”
