Biology Teacher Wins Statewide Award

OLATHE – Olathe Northwest High School biology teacher Camden Hanzlick-Burton is the 2015 Outstanding Biology Teacher for Kansas.
This honor was bestowed upon him by the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) and the Kansas Association of Biology Teachers. The program recognizes an outstanding biology teacher from grades 7-12 in each of the 50 states. Candidates are judged on their teaching ability and experience, cooperativeness in the school and community, inventiveness, initiative and student-teacher relationships.
Hanzlick-Burton’s career highlights include his involvement with the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation and mentorship of budding science teachers at the University of Kansas. Most impressive is Hanzlick-Burton’s rapport with students, understanding varying student abilities and individualizing instruction. One of his references described him as “tireless where his students are concerned.”
As an undergraduate at the University of Kansas in a science research laboratory, Hanzlick-Burton discovered his passion of teaching others. He found that “while (he) truly loved biology and the scientific process of exploration, (he) loved helping others find their love for discovery even more.”
With this award, Hanzlick-Burton receives a complementary one-year membership to NABT, will be recognized at the NABT National Conference Honors Luncheon, receive gift certificates from Carolina Biological Supply Company, resources from other sponsors, a trophy to display in his classroom and a certificate for the school to display.
