JCCC hosts Criminal Justice Day on Sept. 16
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Have you ever considered a career in criminal justice? Or would you like to learn what it would be like to be a police officer or an emergency responder or a crime lab technician?
Representatives from more than two dozen organizations will be on the Johnson County Community College campus for Criminal Justice Day on Wednesday, Sept. 16. The event will run from 9 a.m. until noon in the Commons Courtyard and in the circle parking drive between the Student Center and the Gymnasium.
“We do this to promote public awareness,” said Kay King, a professor in JCCC’s Administration of Justice program, which is housed in the Police Academy on the far west side of campus. “Students tend to take classes on the main campus so some of them might not even realize that we are here.”
For the first time this year, the Student Life program is partnering in the event by adding a safety awareness dimension, said Mindy Kinnaman, manager of student life and leadership development. Volunteers will be giving out sample emergency grab bags with some freebies and copies of what a real emergency bag should include. Representatives from SafeHome and the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) also will be there with information.
Among the organizations and programs expected to participate are numerous area police and sheriff departments, the Missouri Highway Patrol, area colleges and the U.S. Army. Participants will be bringing vehicles and equipment that they use to do their jobs, as well as a gun display. Police vehicles and a mobile command center will be set up in that circle drive just down the hill between the Student Center and Gymnasium.
