Comcast announces gigabit internet service coming to KC area

COMCAST ANNOUNCES GIGABIT INTERNET SERVICE COMING TO

KANSAS CITY AREA

Super-Fast 1 Gig Service Available in Early 2017
Using the Network Connections Already in Most Customers’ Homes

Kansas City, Mo. – November 1, 2016 – Comcast today announced it will start offering a residential gigabit Internet service to local customers in the company’s suburban Kansas City service area in early 2017. The company will deliver these super-fast speeds with DOCSIS 3.1 technology, which uses the existing wiring that most people already have in their homes.

“The introduction of a new 1 Gig Internet service is a reflection of our commitment to deliver the fastest speeds to the most homes in the Kansas City area,” said Jeff Freyer, regional vice president, Comcast. “Currently, nearly 80 percent of Comcast customers have 50 Mbps speeds or more, nationwide. Soon, early adopters in our suburban Kansas City footprint will be able to enjoy a new gigabit service that delivers some of the fastest speeds on their block, without our having to tear up streets or rewire a customer’s home.”

The company’s new 1 Gig Internet service allows for faster, broad-based deployment across communities. To enjoy the service, all customers will need to do is install a new DOCSIS 3.1 compatible cable modem that is capable of delivering gigabit speeds.

“Comcast continues to play a crucial role in Olathe’s development as a high-tech community,” said Olathe Mayor Michael Copeland. “We thank Comcast for choosing to bring this exciting new broadband technology to the area, and for their belief in our high-growth market.”

In the past 15 years, Comcast has increased Internet speeds 17 times. The company also nearly doubles the capacity of its network every 18-24 months.

“Comcast has been a long-time contributor to the vibrant economy of the city of Independence and our position as a high-tech leader in the market,” said Independence Mayor Eileen Weir. “We appreciate Comcast’s partnership and look forward to the availability of this new broadband option for our residents.”
