AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Breast Center receives reaccreditation

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Breast Center has successfully passed its third reaccreditation review from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) survey. This triennial accreditation through the American College of Surgeons demonstrates the multidisciplinary commitment to excellence in breast imaging and cancer care across the United States. The NAPBC accreditation first launched nationally in 2005 and AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Breast Center was the first to achieve accreditation in the Kansas City metropolitan area in 2014.

“This NAPBC accreditation continues to shine a bright light on every aspect of our Breast Center and the incredible dedication of our outstanding cancer care team,” says Connie Wood, Regional Executive Director Cancer Care, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “This is a testament of the exceptional quality care we provide to our those in our community who are in need of breast cancer treatment, prevention services, and imaging capabilities.”

As part of the survey, a site reviewer with NAPBC conducted an on-site visit at AdventHealth Breast Center Shawnee Mission and evaluated the Breast Center’s leadership, clinical management, commitment to research, community outreach efforts, professional education opportunities for staff, and quality improvement. In the end, results from the survey concluded that AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Breast Center has maintained excellent program standards with dedicated oncology staff and administrative support, even throughout the challenges of COVID-19.

This accreditation also highlights AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission’s growth. In spring 2024, construction will complete on the new Cancer Institute. The new Cancer Institute will offer care for every step of a patient’s cancer journey – from prevention, to diagnosis, to treatment, to follow-up appointments. The Cancer Institute will include new specially designed spaces for radiation oncology, infusion therapies, lab, pharmacy, rehabilitation services and provider clinics. The building will also house AdventHealth’s Diagnostic Breast Center, a regional destination for mammography.

“Caring for patients and their families is at the core of everything we do, just like we care for our own families. That is why we designed the Cancer Institute as if our own family members will be treated here,” said Sam Huenergardt, president and chief executive officer, AdventHealth Mid-America Region. “The result is a space that will be beautiful, nurturing, and welcoming for everyone needing compassionate care while promoting efficiency, cutting edge technology and collaboration amongst our renowned clinicians, nurses and administrative professionals.”
