Filling the Void: Furniture Mall of Kansas Set to Open Saturday in Former Benchmark Furnishings Building

Olathe, KS – Furniture Mall of Kansas, opening to the general public June 13th in the former Benchmark Furniture building, will not only bring over 100 jobs to market, but make an immediate impact for furniture shoppers seeking more selection and variety than currently offered in Johnson County.

The Furniture Mall of Kansas will have an immediate and significant economic impact on Olathe, said Tim McKee, CEO of the Olathe Chamber of Commerce.  “The store fills a huge void in the furniture market in southern Johnson County,” he says. “And the design of the store will make it an attractive destination, drawing people from out of town and out of state. Its location just across from the Bass Pro Shop—another great draw for visitors—provides good synergy in that location and momentum for further growth on the west side of I-35.”

Based on no fewer than 82 years of third generation furniture business experience, the Winter’s have designed the store to enrich and guide. Featured prominently for customers to enjoy are:

  • An Amish Barn, complete with wood peg-and-mortise construction. The structure was raised within the store by Amish Impressions
  • A unique, interactive two-story, 15,000-gallon digital fish tank, designed by owner Jamie Winter, an electrical engineer by trade. Visitors can feed the fish.
  • A café that offers complimentary homemade frozen custard, family recipe cookies and other baked goods, gourmet coffees, and sodas.
  • Two open-air patios.
  • Color-coding along sprawling pathways to help visitors locate desired destinations.

The 161,000 square foot Olathe showroom, larger than three football fields, will consist of five store banners under one roof, organized as good – better – best to make it easy to narrow down the huge selection.  RoomMakers, is the “good,” consisting mostly of Ashley Furniture; Discovery Furniture, is the “better,” a customizable multi-line mid-priced format; and Marling’s Furniture, the “best,” for upper middle and high-end product with many custom options to make it uniquely yours.  Mattress Headquarters will feature over 100 mattress from top brands such as Sealy, Serta, Simmons, and Tempurpedic, and the Abbey Flooring Headquarters offers hundreds of options for hardwood, tile, laminate, countertops, and backsplashes.

The Winter’s have said the goal of their “mall” concept is to maintain a small-store feel and service but with big-store selection for their guests.

“We have the best of furniture and accessories on the market today. Our inventory is comparable to big-chain furniture stores,” says Jamie Winter. “By grouping by cost, we help customers narrow the search for products that best meet their needs. It simplifies the shopping experience.”

The Winter family now owns and operates a Furniture Mall of Kansas and a distribution center in Topeka as well as the mall in Olathe.

The reason for choosing Olathe, Tim McKee says, because the Winter’s saw an upscale community of 130,000 people with no large furniture store and they knew they could fill that void. Jeff Winter says that the fact that the furniture mall’s business philosophy and values fit with the community’s was also a factor in choosing Olathe.
